Is Your Home Ready for Spring?

Daffodil stems are peeking out and you might even be noticing some warmer weather! You may be ready for it, but is your house? Spring is the perfect time to give your home some touch-ups and conduct some valuable maintenance after a long winter. Check out this list of our top tips for making Spring home improvements:

Test Your Smoke Alarms and CO Detectors

If you missed #checkyourbatteries day, take this time to check your smoke and CO detectors. Keep in mind their expiration dates as well. Smoke detectors last about 10 years and CO monitors last about 5-7 years.

Inspect Your Foundation Vents

If your home has a crawl space, there will be vents located around your home. These vents keep pests out while allowing air to circulate to prevent moisture build up. Clear these vents of any debris such as leaves, dirt, and sticks.

Speaking of Vents, Don't Forget Your Dryer Vent

If you forgot to have your dryer vent cleaned in the fall, now is the time to do it. It is important to have your dryer vent cleaned (or to clean it yourself) because clogged vents can easily cause fires, in fact, over 3,000 fires are caused by dryers every year. Clogged dryers can also make your dryer less efficient by significantly increasing dry times. When you do clean your dryer vent, put the date in your member portal and vipHomeLink will alert you next year, so you will never skip a cleaning again.

Replace Your AC Filters

It is going to get hot very soon, clean or replace your AC filters to keep them running at their best and most efficient.

Unclog Gutters and Downspouts

Clean out as much of your gutter as you can by hand and then flush the rest with a garden hose. They also make special attachments for your leaf blower that can assist in cleaning out your gutters and possibly save you from pulling out the ladder.

Check Your Roof

Inspect your shingles for any that maybe missing, damaged, or for any other usual signs. Broken or missing shingles can lead to a roof leak which can cause major damage or a home flood. Leaking roofs may not always be apparent right away.

Weatherstripping

Did you remember to replace your weatherstripping in the fall? No, well you might want to do it now. Weatherstripping will keep the cold air in and the warm air out and in the process may save you some money on your energy bill.

Replace Torn or Damaged Screens

As the weather gets warmer you might be opening your door and windows more, take the time to replace your door and window screens.

Spray for Pests

Ahh spring, love is in the air, not just for people and cute animals. but for mosquitoes, flies, and other such pests that you do not want in your home as well. Have your home sprayed for pests before your backyard becomes a breeding ground for unwanted guests.

Fill in Low Areas

Use compacted soil to fill in low areas of your yard. When April showers come compacted soil will help prevent stagnant pools of water from forming which can cause home leaks and can become the perfect place for insects to start their families.
