How to Cut Your Utility Bill

As the weather turns colder and the days are shorter, the average family consumes more energy in the winter than in the summer. Not only can this be a strain on the environment and resources, but it can also put a lot of pressure on your wallet. Here's some great tips from the experts at vipHomeLink to help you significantly reduce your utility bill by making a few small changes.

Let the Sun Shine In

Use the natural lights of daylight hours to help light your home and keep it warm. Opening your blinds or curtains allows sunlight to enter your home providing you with light and warmth. Using the sun to light your home during the daytime is free! You may even want to use solar powered lights outdoors.

Turn Down the Heat, Really!

Lowering the temperature when you are not home or when you are sleeping saves you money. It is estimated that for every 8 hours that your heat is one degree lower you can save 1% on your energy bill.

Avoid Energy Vampires

Electronics use a lot of energy even when they are off or in standby mode. Televisions and computers are energy vampires! To help combat this plug TVs, computers and similar items into a smart power cord that can be turned off when not in use. For small appliances that are not used very often, such as the toaster, simply unplug when not in use.

Avoid Energy Drain

Be sure to seal vents and clean blower components. Airflow issues can cut the efficiency of your home heating unit by up to 40%.

Replace Air Filters

Buildup on filters can cause your air conditioner or heater to be less efficient, costing you more money.

Upgrade Your Light Bulbs

Save 20%-30% on your bill, or roughly $75 a year, simply by replacing all your old light bulbs with LED or CFL bulbs. A simple switch with big savings.

Install or Replace Weatherstripping

By having drafty doors and windows you are literally throwing money out the window by allowing the heat you've paid for to escape outside. Replacing the weatherstripping on doors and windows will help to mitigate that issue.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

By switching from a standard thermostat to a programmable thermostat that allows you to set the temperature for when you are not home or sleeping can save you up to 10% on your heating bill.

Upgrade Your Appliances

If you are in the market to upgrade appliances look for those with a blue Energy Star® label. The energy star label is given to those products that meet strict cost saving and energy efficiency requirements. Energy Star® even divides the country into four climate zones so you can choose the one that is best for your home, depending on where you live. If you cannot afford to replace all of your old appliances consider starting with your refrigerator or washing machine. Old refrigerators are hugely inefficient and can cost between $140-$160 to run annually, conversely an Energy Star rated fridge can cost as little as $20 a year. Top loading washing machines are also incredibly inefficient; by switching to a front loading machine you can use 50% less energy and up to one-third less water.

Install Dual-Zone Heating and Cooling

Granted this is a big ticket item, so this might be only practical if you are already renovating, building a home, or installing central air. By using a dual-zone heating and cooling system you can heat or cool the zone of the house that you are in without wasting money by heating or cooling the entire house. Maximize savings by using a programmable thermostat in each of the zones.

Bonus: Plant Trees

Planting deciduous trees on your property, the type that lose their leaves in the fall, will allow you to shade your house in the summer and allow the sun to reach your home in the winter. Plus, it is also great for the environment.
